A wall-mounted battery camera labelled for the bedroom recorded a woman asleep on her back with her arms spread, beneath a window whose blinds throw bright bars across the wall. In the first four seconds her legs draw up and apart in a slow, deliberate way, as if lifted. The clock then jumps from 03:14:05 to 03:14:16, and in the frames after the jump a large shadow with a rounded head and sloping shoulders appears on the wall to the right of the window, leaning toward the bed. It fades, the clock runs backwards to 03:14:10, and a small grey block flickers in the frame before the clip ends.

Timeline of events

  1. Subject asleep on her back, arms spread. Bars of light from the blinds steady on the wall.

  2. Right knee lifts and bends.

  3. Both legs drawn up, then eased apart. Arms and head do not move.

  4. Legs settle back toward straight.

  5. Clock jumps eleven seconds forward. A large shadow with a rounded head and sloping shoulders appears on the wall right of the window, leaning toward the bed.

  6. Shadow fades. Clock now reads earlier than the frame before.

  7. A small grey rectangle flickers in the upper middle of the frame for a few frames.

  8. Clip ends with the clock reading 03:14:10. Subject in her starting position.

Witness statement

That camera was a gift from my mother after I moved into the apartment alone. It says BEDROOM on the screen because she set it up and named it. I used to find that funny.

My legs come up. I do not do that in my sleep, and even if I did, watch how they come up. Slow. Together. Then apart. Then back. Like being arranged.

Then the clock goes wrong and there is a shadow by the window that is taller than me and it is leaning over the bed. Leaning. You can see the shoulders tip. There is nothing in my apartment that could throw that. The blinds were down. The light on the wall does not even flicker while it happens.

The clock ends on a time before the time it started at. I do not understand how a clip can end before it begins. Neither did the man at the store when I brought the camera back. He gave me a new one. I did not put the new one up.

What investigators found

The camera is a battery unit in low-light colour mode, mounted high on the wall opposite the bed with the window in the top left of the frame. The bars of light on the wall come from a street light through the blinds and are the fixed reference for this clip: they do not move or flicker at any point, which rules out a change in the light source as the cause of the shadow.

The leg movement in the first four seconds has the same character as in cases #0003 and #0004: a slow lift at the knee, a lateral movement, then a return, with the rest of the body slack. It is not a jerk and it does not repeat.

The shadow appears after the first clock jump and sits on the wall to the right of the window, the one part of the wall that is not lit by the bars. It has a rounded top and shoulders that slope toward the bed, and across its short life it tilts, which a static object's shadow does not do. Nothing in the frame stands between the street light and that wall. The clock behaviour is the strangest in the archive so far: forward eleven seconds, back five, forward eight, back nine, in a clip whose picture never stops. The grey block near the end is a decoding artefact and is the only part of this clip we are confident about.

What happened next

The tenant returned the camera to the store, where it was tested and found to keep time correctly. She did not install the replacement and sleeps with the hall light on. Her mother has since asked for the original camera back and has it, boxed, in a cupboard; she has not connected it. The tenant sent the clip after seeing the two 24 October cases and wrote that she did not want a theory, only for the clip to be somewhere other than her phone.
